Actor in a Supporting Role
This one should be highly competitive, but Ke Huy Quan did two things:
-
He played multiple personalities so well that we were able to follow what could be an otherwise confusing "fuck this multiverse shit -- put Top Gun on again" experience, and
-
He campaigned on a sympathetic "I said I was done with acting, but really, I couldn't get cast in anything for 20 years. It was painful..." tour.
-
Brendan Gleeson, Colm in The Banshees of Inishirin
- This Irish actor and musician (he plays all of his own fiddle parts until...well, you know...) has been a personal favorite since In Bruges. He is compelling here, but not even one of the top three performances in his own movie! Sorry, mucker.
-
Judd Hirsch, Uncle Boris in The Fabelmans
-
I'm a fan, but Judd is in this movie for about as long as I can read Kierkegaard without my eyes getting heavy. BTW, was Taxi actually funny, funny for its time, or funny now that I can't see it anymore? I think we're all a little too swayed by "Whaaattt....doesssss....a......yellowwwww....liggghhhttt...."

Ke Huy Quan, Waymond Wong in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once
-
You get that "where do I know this guy from" feeling that is immediately tamped down by "uh oh...Asian...am I confusing him with some other Asian actor...again?!?" This is where you know Ke Huy from -- the most entertaining thing in a shitty movie from a series you otherwise love. His ability to move between characters so easily glued this movie together (same comment will appear for Michelle Yeoh and Stephanie Hsu -- don't know how all three of them pulled it off). This is your winner, even though my choice is...

-
Barry Keoghan, Dominic in The Banshees of Inishirin
-
This should be a lock, but the aforementioned vote-pull from fellow castmates combined with the nostalgia-driven sympathy for Ke Huy Quan make sure my pick doesn't win. It isn't the abrupt friendship dissolution or the disrespect of fingers that brought the dark to Banshees -- it was Barry's Dominic character. No disrepect, Ke Huy.

Brian Tyree Henry, James in Causeway
-
Apologies to Mr. Henry, but no one -- including me -- saw Causeway. I'll be more supportive going forward. After your role in Book of Mormon, I owe you better, General. Enjoy the no-pressure show.

For Profit...
Self-mutilation is the next left-thing, starting with the right hand.
For Real...
I'd cut more than fingers off...on the air...if I thought it would add a couple of points to the share price. Really...it's not like it would be that big a loss.
