Actor in a Lead Role

  • Will Smith, Richard Williams in King Richard

    • Lost that it was Will Smith -- that alone gets some points! Even though this was a family Father's Day gift to Richard Williams, Will gets the Venus Rosewater Dish (the award for winning Wimbledon, you non-erudite toadies!  Ok, yeah, I had to look that up).

  • Javier Bardem, Desi Arnaz in Being the Ricardos

    • Apparently, Javy lobbied to play Desi. I'd be afraid I'd fall into an SNL parody of Ricky Ricardo, but Sr. Bardem brought the strong womanizing band-leader to life so well, I was ready to drop my pantalones.

  • Andrew Garfield, Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick...BOOM!

    • Everyone's second-favorite Spider Man showed he's worthy of more recognition by playing history's only conscientious objector to win a Medal of Honor in Hacksaw Ridge, a wonderful movie overshadowed by the despicable Mel Gibson as Director. Hey, only got to play Spidey because Tom Holland couldn't keep his web-hole shut! Hope that makes up for no statue this year.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch, Phil Burbank in The Power of the Dog

    • Winner winner, Cucumber Dinner. He dominates the movie -- almost too much in the first two acts, but it all makes sense with the big reveal in Act III. You could well be making room for your first statue, Dr. Strange.

  • Denzel Washington, Macbeth in The Tragedy of Macbeth

(d)emocratic Response

40% White guys?  That's a start.  Literally, anyone else.

BTW, Javier Bardem is from Spain. Cuba is the island on the left (see what I did there?) Spain is in Europe, on the right. But it's all the same to you, huh? Thanks for nothin', standardized testing.

Authoritarian Response

Comrade Ricardo, Cuba

Look at these men. So happy. Socialism = Happiness!

BTW, you mention Mel Gibson. He should move to Russia. He fit in here. As they say in Queen's Gambit, "Chessmate!"
