Actress in a Lead Role
Snubbed this year is Rachel Zegler. I'm upset, but not as upset if she were nominated -- we have a junior theater major in the house who doesn't understand the vagaries of landing a role like this. Ms. Zegler was the one chosen after 30,000 auditions. But our daughter equally doesn't understand why I couldn't manipulate her genetic makeup to eliminate any resemblance to me. On this front, I couldn't be more sympathetic.

The best Crown "Queen Elizabeth" (with apologies to the adorable Clare Foy -- we just can't believe an adorable Her Majesty) gives a stellar performance. We hate her, but sympathize at the same time -- the complexity of life captured beautifully.

Jessica Chastain, Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye
-
I had forgotten about TFB, she of James "Drink This, Jessica Hahn" Baker fame. It wasn't just the recognizable eye makeup, it was the believability. The movie has its weak spots (the switch to video was more of a distraction than an effective device), but her performance is undeniably stellar. Don't put the fake eyelashes on the statue, Jess.

Kristen Stewart, Diana Spencer in Spencer

Hey, an American playing a Brit, reversing a disturbing trend of late (I've been worried this was their plan to take back part of the empire). We believed it was Diana.

Penelope Cruz, Janis in Parallel Mothers

The very definition of marriage with children -- the mother you married and hers. Sadly, no one saw this movie, but it's nice to be nominated</awardsshowcliche>

Nicole Kidman, Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos
-
A character and actress so familiar, no one would want to play her, but Ms. Kidman does Ms. Ball proud. Big cred for the scenes when Lucy is envisioning how the physical comedy will play on the show. Well done, LOO-CEE!

(d)emocratic Response
Jessica Chastain, Tammy Faye Bakker
We reject the demonization of any woman, including the wife of a televangelist. Though we're NOT denouncing religion...or the rejection of religion. We reject nothing. Except men who abuse women. Even Women who wear too much eye makeup. #metoomaybelline

Movie lied. Ball was one of us. Children are Reds, too. Believe.
